University of Nevada – Las Vegas, Senior

I love my college because…

because it was ranked second most diverse campus in the nation. Coming from a small town in rainy Washington of only 800 students, I’ve always wanted to go to a more populated college with lots of sun to continue my higher education. And after I found a college with 30,000 students in the desert, I couldn’t imagine a better choice. The professors are nice and help you with any questions you have, and the location provides thousands of opportunities to meet people from all kinds of businesses to make the connections you need for your future career.

I really hate when…

people ask questions during movies. Some movies are confusing, sure, but I haven’t seen the darn thing either so asking me what’s going to happen next won’t do either of us any good. In fact, maybe if you would be quiet for half a second then maybe we both can figure it out.

I major in…

Communications and my minor is Business. Now what I plan to do with my degree isn’t as cut and dry as most people. I want to be a pilot so I’m going to attend flight school once I graduate in spring 2017 with my Bachelor’s. However, to be a pilot you must at least have your A.A. I started college when I was 16, so I graduated with my A.A. when I was 17. But I know the field is extremely difficult to land a job in, so I wanted to go above and beyond and acquire two more years of college experience to better help my chances. Hence why I’m currently attending UNLV. I have never been fond of public speaking but I wanted a challenge so I picked communications because I know it will better prepare me for interacting with all of the people I’ll meet from different countries with different cultural backgrounds. And much to my surprise, I’m actually pretty good at it. I ended up getting first place out of 1100 contestants in the UNLV speech contest.

My hometown is awesome because…

of the trees, the flowers, the beautiful colors, the sunsets, and the sunrises. Washington is one of the most ecologically diverse states in the country so we have rainforests, islands, plains, mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and coastline. It’s so beautiful all the time and we get to experience all four seasons unlike a lot of places. Aside from how beautiful it is, my friends and family are what make home so special. Oh, and let’s not forget the coffee.

At school, you can find me…

as part of a sorority on campus called Deta Zeta. It’s an enriching and amazing sisterhood that encourages engagement with the community, gets you actively volunteering on a regular basis, and introduces you to some powerful inspiring young women. Aside from that, I enjoy hitting the gym, and cheering on my friends in Greek life as they kick some butt in intramural games.

My favorite late night study snack is definitely…

grapes and Red Bull. Because let’s face it, there’s no way I can stay up late studying without Red Bull and grapes are a perfect little snack to keep you satisfied while staying healthy.

If I had 24 hours left to live, I would…

spend whatever it costs to fly home and spend my last few hours with friends and family. I would then donate whatever funds I had left to my favorite charity, The Painted Turtle Camp, that lets children with terminally ill medical conditions celebrate just being a kid.

If I could change one thing about the world, it would be…

to make everyone be as thoughtful, loving, and understanding to those they don’t know as they are towards loved ones. I feel that if everyone had the same courtesy and respect for strangers as they do loved ones, the world would be a better place. For example, strangers would be more likely to help someone in need, such as a person who is homeless or hungry.

I’m going to be Miss COED 2017 because…

I would love the opportunity to represent my university. I’m extremely passionate about achieving my goals and maintaining great grades. I also believe I would be a great role model for all ages because I’m the perfect example of a young female who plans to enter a predominantly male field. It just shows that anyone can achieve their dream.
