ABOUT Christa
Texas Tech University, Graduate Student
I love my college because…
Texas Tech is located in the small West Texas town of Lubbock, and Lubbock is the definition of a college town. Everyone in the city supports our Red Raiders in every single sport whether it be football, baseball, or even cheerleading. I absolutely love the spirit of “Techsans.” The tradition of Texas Tech is outstanding as well. Although it’s only 93 years old, which is young compared to other institutions, there are so many traditions that have been passed down. People think that Lubbock is in the middle of the desert where we ride horses to class, but what they do not know about is the amazing student day and night life that Texas Tech brings to every student. I have had the best 4 years of my life here at Tech.
I major in…
Biology and a Chemistry Minor, that I graduated with this past May 2016 from Texas Tech. With this degree, I was humbly accepted into the University of Houston College of Optometry where I will begin my optometric studies for the next 4 years starting in the Fall of 2016. My ultimate dream is to become a pediatric eye doctor and open up a private practice of my own.
My hometown is because…
it is known for its beautiful skyline of Reunion Tower, the Omni Hotel, and much more. It is home to the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Rangers. Dallas has given me so many opportunities that I would have never had access to or even dreamed of if my family hadn’t moved from my birth town of El Paso, TX when I was 5 years old. I love the diversity that comes with Dallas: food, activities, culture. There is always something new to experience, even after living here for the past 17 years.
At school, you can find me…
as one of two 4-year members of the Texas Tech Pom Squad my senior year. This year, I hold the title of Miss Coppell, which is a suburb of Dallas. With this title, I will compete in the Miss Texas America Pageant. I was also Communications Director for Mortar Board Top 50 Seniors Forum Chapter at Texas Tech and Secretary of Pre-Optometry Professionals Society. I am also a member of Texas Tech Masked Rider Committee, Golden Key National Honor Society, Silent Raiders: American Sign Language Organization, and Gender Equity Council: Women’s Leadership Council.
The coolest class I’ve taken so far is…
developmental biology. The professor was an AWESOME, old hippie with a white ponytail that taught so well. He was as chill as a professor could ever be. The subject interested me in the first place, but he made learning about development more enjoyable than I thought it could ever be! The way that he taught us the material made his difficult tests definitely doable. He was so easygoing and fun to talk to about academics and our own futures.
My ideal first date would be…
going to a good Italian restaurant for dinner first. Italian is my absolute favorite. After that, I would love to watch a movie at home and get to know the guy. It’s nice to be pampered and spoiled, but I would much rather get to know someone before all of that!
My favorite late night study snack is definitely…
almond butter when I’m studying late. I don’t really like fast food or junk food. I get those individual packets of the vanilla or maple syrup flavored Justin’s Almond Butter and just eat it by itself straight out of the packet like it is candy. Sometimes I like to put it on a rice cake, but eating it by itself is so much easier to carry around.
If I had 24 hours left to live, I would…
skydive if I hadn’t already done it yet, and I am definitely doing that somewhere with beautiful scenery. I would eat all of my favorite foods that I could get to (restaurant and homemade). I would also want to be with my closest friends and family just having a good time together and not even talking about how it would be my last 24 hours.
If I could change one thing about the world, it would be…
to push all of the continents closer together. This way, I could travel to different countries faster and easier. I will finally get to visit Indonesia (where my parents are from) again this summer, and I will be flying for a total of 24 hours before stepping foot onto Indonesian soil. Visiting all of the continents is on my bucket list, and having everything closer would definitely make it a little easier to accomplish. Plus, it would be so fun!
I’m going to be Miss COED 2017 because…
I believe that I have represented my university every single day that I have been a student at Texas Tech. I have represented them locally and nationally multiple times throughout the past four years. I know what it takes to represent such a popular and high standard brand, and I think that I can do exactly what I have done for Texas Tech for COED. I believe that I am a great student and a well-rounded person who can adapt to almost any situation thrown at me. I love networking, and I know that as Miss COED 2017, I will be given a limitless amount of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. It would be an honor to represent COED, even if it is just for one year.
