ABOUT Abby
Iowa State University, Sophomore
MY COLLEGE KICKS ASS BECAUSE…
It’s a big college campus with a little college feel. I see my friends and people I know everywhere I go. The campus is BEAUTIFUL year round with beautiful scenery, wild life, buildings, and art. There is always something to do and places to be with events and organizations to be a part of, mostly in Greek life, but also outside of it as well. I feel at home here and feel like I am a part of Iowa State in a bigger way.
I MAJOR IN…
My major is english education with a minor in journalism. I hope to become a high school English teacher and to also either write a book on the side or even become a writer in the big city of Chicago.
OH YEAH, AND YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW THAT…
I am definitely a creative and passionate person — I’m passionate about helping other people grow. I love writing, English, painting, and helping others. I am the friend that is the listener and is always there for you. I love giving advice so someone can be the best person they can possibly be. I want to become a teacher to help others, but also be a part of their life in a bigger way, mostly as a role model. I love foods, my favorite foods are pizza and peanut butter. I am outgoing, laid back, and down-to-earth.
AT SCHOOL, I’M INVOLVED IN…
I am in the Pi Beta Phi sorority on campus and love every minute of it. I am also an SI leader on campus for the Psychology 101 class, which is essentially a tutor to 5-50 students at a time in a classroom setting rather than one-on-one, which is preparing me for my future endeavors to become a teacher. I am also a writer for the Odyssey at Iowa State, which is giving me some great writing experience which I love.
DESCRIBE YOUR LAST FRIDAY NIGHT.
There was a pairing party with our homecoming pairing, Kappa Sigma, and it was 90’s themed. I rocked a pony with a scrunchie, ordered a Biggie Smalls t-shirt that came in a 3XL, so I made it into a dress, and wore my white Chuck Taylor’s with a flannel shirt tied around my waist. I danced all through the night, and it was probably one of the most fun nights I have had so far this year.
WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE MISS COED 2016?
I believe Iowa State has given me so many opportunities to become a better me and to have an amazing experience that I want to showcase their efforts to everyone else. I could cry for how grateful I am for this crazy adventure at Iowa State. I definitely chose the right adventure.
IF YOU COULD GIVE OUR READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
As a freshman last year, I was part time to gain residency in Iowa and could not be in a sorority. I was bored, watching Netflix 24/7 and non stop working. I was about to give up hope and just become full-time and give up saving a ton of money. My advice is two things because of this:
1. Everyone says to get involved on campus but DO IT. It changed my life and my adventure here at Iowa State and made me love my college experience to be myself and find things that I love to be a part of and do. You will not have another chance to do these things when you are older.
2. If you feel like giving up hope, think of the positive. I am so happy that I stuck through residency to be able to become a full-time student, yet save myself a ton of money in my future endeavors, and to come out of college debt free. You can do it! Believing in yourself and staying positive in whatever you do will help you not only in college, but for the rest of your life. If you live your life this way, you will never be disappointed.
