Laura Ramos, a 31-year-old married special education teacher at Central High School in Connecticut, was arrested Tuesday by police for allegedly having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student.
Ramos has been charged with second-degree sexual assault after police say she engaged in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student who she allegedly told that her husband wasn’t satisfying her.
Central High School officials placed Ramos on administrative leave following her arrest Tuesday, The Connecticut Post reports. The 31-year-old’s lawyer says his client is “cloaked in the presumption of innocence.”
Officers were called to the school on June 9 following a complaint of sexual assault. Officers said a student told a teacher that Ramos had been having sexual intercourse with one of her students in the special education program.
Police say Ramos told them she had engaged in a relationship with the 18-year-old from December 2016 to April 2017. According to police, the two had multiple sexual encounters during this time.
A separate student told police that Ramos had been texting with him, WFSB reports. In those text, Ramos allegedly revealed that her husband was not satisfying her.
“Ms. Ramos would complain that her ‘man’ or ‘guy’ does not want to have sex or do anything with her,” according to police documents.
The student said he began to believe another classmate was having a sexual relationship with Ramos.
“Witness 1 noticed the victim would hang out in Ms. Ramos’ class and…would watch them make eyes at each other like flirting,” court documents said. The witness also told police that his text message conversation with Ramos included sexually-charged content. Ramos reportedly even asked about the possibility of buying marijuana “for her and her man.”
The teacher initially denied having a sexual relationship with the student when detectives first approached her. Later, she admitted that the investigation had scared her to the point that she asked the victim to deny their relationship, police say. The two also discussed deleting text messages sent between them.
Eventually, she admitted to police that she and the student had sex “a handful of times” in her car – the most recent encounter having taken place in April. On Monday, Ramos resigned from the school even though the district had already begun the process of terminating her employment.
“Please be assured that the safety and welfare of our students is our main priority at Bridgeport Public Schools, and we make every effort to ensure the ongoing safety of our students,” the district said in a statement.
“We take seriously all allegations of inappropriate conduct which threatens the well-being of our students, and such misconduct will not be tolerated.”
