Phi Delta Theta History
Phi Delta Theta was founded by Robert Morrison, John McMillan Wilson, Robert Thompson Drake, John Wolfe Lindley, Ardivan Walker Rodgers, and Andrew Watts Rogers on December 26, 1848 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. They are called the Immortal Six, and according to Phi Delta Theta’s website, the fraternity’s three pillars are: “The cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality. Shortened, we refer to the principles as friendship, sound learning and rectitude.”
Phi Delta Theta grew rapidly, as they had their first convention in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1851 and their first national convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1868. They became an international fraternity in 1902, when a chapter was established at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
Given that baseball legend Lou Gehrig was a Phi Delta Theta, it makes sense that the fraternity is partnered with the ALS Association. Through fundraiser events, Phi Delta Theta donates money to the ALS Association to support Lou Gehrig’s disease research.
