ABOUT Emiliy
San Jose State University, Sophomore
Why did you choose your school and what makes it better than the rest?
I love my school because of its people. It is a very diverse school and a huge change coming from Catholic private school all of my life to a large commuter public school, but I love everything about it. I love how invisible I can be within a crowd, but also the comfortability I have when I see people I know and love. I love our Greek Life because unlike most schools, everyone knows everyone and is super close. I love how although the location is sketchy, the campus is beautiful. I’ll be honest and say that SJSU was probably at the bottom on my college list, but it was fate and I could not be happier with my decision. SJSU is my home, even more so than my hometown, because I have found people who show me more love and loyalty than those I have known almost my entire life. I also love its location, because there are so many fun things to do in the bay area, and it is in the Silicon Valley, which gives plenty of wonderful job opportunities.
What kind of activities are you involved in? (sorority, theatre, clubs, etc)
I am involved in my sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi and am on our Leaders Council (executive board) as our Vice President of Chapter Development. I plan all sisterhood events, chapters, retreats, dinners, etc. I am also involved in a club called One Love which deals with assault, I have been a victim of assault and rape, so it is a very important club to me. I wish to raise awareness of just how serious assault and rape are. I am also a campus manager at SJSU for University Tees, so I work with students on and off campus trying to sell their products.
What’s your major/what are you thinking of majoring in?
My major is Radio, Television, & Film and a lot of people doubt my choice because they think I will not be successful, but I really want to produce, write, and direct because I have so many stories I wish to tell, and also want to prove people wrong, because I am capable.
Do you have a favorite sports team?
Warriors
Which celebrity would you invite to a dinner party at your house?
I would invite Oprah Winfrey, because she is charitable and I hope to be just like her. I love giving back to others, and all I want is for the world to be a better place. I love community service and giving back even if I do not receive anything in return. I genuinely just want people to feel happy and loved, and I feel as if Oprah is the same way. She always inspired me growing up and I hope to one day meet her.
What is your go to pre-game song?
My favorite song is 1-800-273-8255, because it’s message is so important to me. I have been through a lot of traumatic events in my life, and as much as I hate to admit it, used to be suicidal. This song hits my heart because I know what it is like to just want to die, but we shouldn’t do that to ourselves. People need to know just how much they are loved and need to be reminded of that daily. One day it may be too late, so for me, this song is everything. Not only that, but the performance at the VMA’s was phenomenal and I highly encourage everyone to watch/listen to it because it’s message is so much more than people can even fathom. Life is too short to be anything but happy, and my goal in life is to always make people happy and feel loved.
