UFC Fight Night 134 is upon us and it is full of UFC veterans who will look to remain competitive in the organization despite getting older. Veterans like Stefan Struve and Glover Teixiera have the ability to end their respective fights very quickly which should help make for a very entertaining main card. However, the main attraction for this event is Shogun Rua and Anthony Smith in what promises to be an an extremely even contest.
Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Shogun Rua is coming off of a three fight winning streak. However, he has not fought in the octagon since March 11, 2017 when he knocked out Gian Villante in the third round. Now, the 36-year-old possesses an impressive career record of 35-10 with zero draws. However, do not let the record fool you. Shogun used to be a great fighter but one has to assume that he will not look the same due to the lengthy layoff. Shogun still has the knockout power and the solid ground game but he very likely will need to fight off some rust early on in this fight.
Shogun’s next opponent is Anthony Smith who boasts an impressive MMA record of 29-13. Smith has won the majority of his fights via knockout but still has managed to win 11 fights via submission. Unlike Shogun, Smith will not have to deal with any potential rust in this fight because he fought roughly a month ago. In that fight, he made his UFC Light Heavyweight debut in which he demolished UFC veteran Rashad Evans so badly that it forced Evans to retire after the fight. Smith is only 29 and is looking for a signature victory that can help improve his résumé as he hopes to be a contender in the Light Heavyweight division in the future.
Although Shogun Rua is a legend, I gotta side with Smith in this contest. The long layoff for Shogun is concerning to me as he faces a young and hungry opponent looking to make a statement. Smith absolutely obliterated a former UFC champion about a month ago and I expect him to do the same this coming Sunday. Shogun does have a solid chin but I think that Smith will end this fight within the first three rounds.
