WWE SmackDown: Results, Live Updates & Must-See Highlights – 04/18/17

Tonight, we’ll name a new #1 contender for the WWE World Championship. Let’s get right to the action of SmackDown Live! Time to see who emerges as the next breakout star of the New Era.

SmackDown will start off with their biggest match of the night. We’ll see a six-pack challenge to determine Orton’s next opponent on the blue brand.

And these six guys aren’t exactly your main event bunch. They’ll have the opportunity of a lifetime, when they compete for their shot in the main event. Dolph Ziggler has been there before a few times. Luke Harper almost wrestled for a world title at WrestleMania (of all places).

But what about the four other guys? Mojo Rawley is fresh off an Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal victory. So, the confidence level is turned all the way in the Rawley camp (super hyped, bro). Meanwhile, “Hard Body” Mahal is emerging as a force to be reckon with in the WWE Universe. Mahal also has a bone to pick with Rawley over the outcome of that battle royal.

Can “The Underdog of the Underground” Sami Zayn pull off an unlikely win? I’m sure the crowd will go nuts if that is the result of tonight’s main event. Stick around and find out.

Opening Segment: Charlotte’s In-Ring Promo

Charlotte is wondering what’s taking so long. Why hasn’t she received a SmackDown Women’s Championship title shot yet? Charlotte looks pissed.

Out comes Naomi….

“Charlotte, Charlotte, Charlotte,” says Naomi. “I don’t know where you think you’re at, but we’re on SmackDown Live!”

Naomi reminds Charlotte that she’s looking at a champion. Ms. Glow doesn’t want to waste anymore time. She’ll give her a shot right here in Kentucky. Naomi lunges at The Queen. The former Miami Heat cheerleader is totally thrashing “The Queen” Charlotte.

Shane O’Mac comes out. He tells Charlotte that she needs to her earn title shot. If she can beat Naomi then The Queen will receive her title shot next week.

After the noise dies down, Charlotte charges the ring and takes down Naomi. Charlotte has the championship in her clutches, but Naomi rushes back and knocks down The Queen.

Naomi once again reigns supreme.

#1 contender’s six-pack challenge for a shot at the WWE World Championship: Dolph Ziggler vs. Luke Harper vs. Mojo Rawley vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Erick Rowan vs. Sami Zayn

It looks like the main event is going up first. This match is very much all over the place. Just six men fighting it out for the top prize in the industry.

Mojo hits a suplerplex on Ziggler. Harper hits a superplex on Rowan. Not quite Suplex City, but you get the deal. Sami Zayn gets him some too, when he sunset flip powerbombed Mahal.

Ziggler smacks Sami and Luke with a superkick. Ziggler goes for the cover on Luke, but Erick Rowan breaks up the pin. Rowan nails Harper with a devastating powerbomb. Mahal and Rowan collide like two big rig trucks, as each attempt a clothesline.

But don’t count out the underdog. Sami Zayn looks primed for victory, but two mysterious men come out from under the ring and hold him down.

Mahal capitalizes, locking Zayn into a submission hold. Sami taps out. Wait, what?

Jinder Mahal wins the six-pack challenge.  He’s the new #1 contender for the WWE World Championship at Backlash. Welcome to the Hard Body Era!

Post-match: Jinder Mahal tells the crowd that they’ll be forced to accept him in the main event. Orton comes out and confronts the new #1 contender. But then they are both interrupted via a video package from Bray Wyatt.

Charlotte Flair vs. Naomi

Charlotte is seriously kicking ass for the opening minutes of this match. She’s making it look easy. The Queen is in complete control of Naomi, beating her to the floor and trapping her body into excruciating submission holds. Charlotte’s legs are like lethal weapons, tossing around Naomi.

But Naomi’s legs are dangerous as well. She kicks the hell outta Charlotte. Both women fall out of the ring, as we go to commercial break.

We’re back from the break, and Charlotte is solidly in control once again. The Queen drops knee after knee on Naomi. But Ms. Glow keeps kicking out. “Naomi is not backing down,” says Michael Cole.

Naomi has regained control. She’s laying the SmackDown on Charlotte. Ms. Glow is about to hit her Rear View finisher on Charlotte, but The Queens counters with a Natural Selection.

Primo & Epico vs. American Alpha

American Alpha dominate during the opening moments of this match. Alpha is using their amateur wrestling abilities to mop the floor with their opponents.

But The Shining Stars or The Colóns (or whatever they’re calling themselves now) make a comeback. Epico hits an out-of-this-world gut buster on American Alpha’s Chad Gable.

Alpha looks primed for victory, but the pros from Puerto Rico came out on top with some sneaky team work.

Baron Corbin vs. AJ Styles

Styles looks overconfident as he starts his match against Corbin. Big mistake, Styles. Big mistake…

Styles strikes Corbin with several quick kicks. But Corbin hits Styles with a right hand that has the Phenomenal One reeling. Corbin ends up dropping Styles’ face onto the ring apron as we go to commercial break.

Corbin is still in control, when we come back from break. We see a clip of Styles eating a devastating clothesline.

Baron is in complete control. He springboard Styles right into the steel post. Oh, the agony. Corbin does not let up. Styles tries to rally back with some left and rights, but Corbin knocks him silly once again.

Styles is really starting to piss Corbin off, and now the big man is vulnerable. Corbin can’t get a hold of Styles. AJ catapults the big man into the steel post. Corbin tries to regain control, but Styles hits a sick Pelé kick on Corbin.

AJ tries to hit Corbin with a Styles Clash. But the big man counters with a choke-slam/back-breaker combo.

But then outta nowhere. Styles traps Corbin into a Calf Crusher. Baron inches his way to the bottom rope and the submission hold gets broken up. Styles tries to attack Corbin, but runs into a Deep Six. Corbin pins Styles…1…2…

Styles kicks out! The crowd chants for “AJ Styles” as Corbin charges The Phenomenal One. AJ ducks out of the way, sending Baron sprawling over the top rope. Styles attempts a Styles Clash onto Corbin, but the big man reverses and sends Styles flying onto Kevin Owens.

Corbin tries to hit an End of Days on Styles, but AJ reverses. Styles climbs onto the ring apron and flies into the air, hitting Corbin with a Phenomenal Forearm. Corbin falls over the barricade and AJ slides into the ring before the referee counts ten.
