The 89th edition of the Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, February 26. While The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be responsible for handing out 24 different Oscars, Jimmy Kimmel will be in charge of the hosting duties.
He will open the festivities with a monologue, and hopefully, keep the show rolling along with plenty of funny jokes throughout the night. In case you don’t know much about Kimmel, I’ll give you a quick history lesson on the first-time Oscars host.
Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he would move to Las Vegas, Nevada when he was nine-years-old. He attened the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for one year and Arizona State University for two years, failing to obtain a degree from either school. But more importantly, I’m sure he had himself one helluva time at those two colleges.
Kimmel got his start in the entertainment business in radio, as he held a number of hosting gigs all over the country. He held jobs for radio stations in Seattle, Tampa, Palm Springs, Tucson, and Los Angeles before making the jump to television. Kimmel had a ton of success with Comedy Central, as he co-hosted Win Ben Stein’s Money (1997-2000), created and co-hosted The Man Show (1999-2003), and created, produced, and co-starred on Crank Yankers (2002-2007)
Even though Kimmel clearly was a big deal before getting his own late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has boosted his popularity to a new stratosphere. Kimmel began hosting the show on January 26, 2003, and it is still running strong today. Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been a staple of ABC’s programming for 14 years and counting.
With the 49-year-old Kimmel’s status entrenched as a household name, ABC decided to have him host the 2017 Oscars. I’m no physic, but I’ve got a damn good feeling that they will not regret their decision. Let’s break down how you watch Kimmel in action.
