Derrick Lewis is preparing for his shot at UFC gold at UFC 230 on Saturday, November 3 which takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lewis is set to take on current heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier less than one month after his stunning come-from-behind knockout win over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229.
Lewis has struggled with cardio throughout his career, so he’s working hard to keep his energy levels up especially with a standout wrestler like Cormier set to be across from him in the Octagon.
Not only is the cardio on point, Lewis explained a hilarious reason as to why while also acknowledging he’s working on his hips.
“Right now I’m a 2X. Usually I’m a 3X but I’m slimming down a little bit so I’m a 2X,” Lewis told Rich Aison on The Rich Eisen Show. “I’ve been doing nothing but cardio. Even the sex. The sex really been helping my hips. I know Cormier is a wrestler so you really got to get them hips down on him so I’ve been working them hips really good.”
Eisen then asked Lewis if he was worried about the myth that athletes should abstain from sex before competition to keep their testosterone levels high, but in typical Derrick Lewis fashion he responded with a quip that led to Eisen breaking out into hysterical laughter.
“Not me,” Lewis noted. “Some times, a couple of times, I had sex the same day as I fought. Just to see if that myth was right, and it wasn’t right. But I was sleepy afterwards but I still had the energy though.”

UFC 230 is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis. The main event came together late, less than one month ahead of the pay-per-view event. Valentina Shevchenko vs. Sijara Eubanks for the vacant women’s flyweight title was initially set to headline the event, but that was pulled from the card after Cormier vs. Lewis was added. Another light change was a shakeup in the co-main event. Dustin Poirier vs. Nate Diaz was set to fill that slot, but it was pulled from the card the same day the main event was announced when Poirier was forced to withdraw due to injury. As a result, we will have top middleweight contenders Chris Weidman and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza battling out inside of the cage.
The UFC 230 main card will air on pay-per-view beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 3, while the preliminary card kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET on UFC Fight Pass before shifting over to FOX Sports 1 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
