Homeland Security investigations (HSI) says authorities have recovered roughly 132 kilos, almost 300 pounds, of cocaine from an unauthorized plane that landed at the Ohio University airport on Wednesday afternoon.
What Happened?
Ohio University police seized an unauthorized aircraft that landed at the Ohio University airport Wednesday afternoon. The plane was carrying around 132 kilos, roughly 300 pounds, of cocaine. HSI says that two men are accused of smuggling cocaine into Gordon K. Bush Airport in an international aircraft. They will face a federal judge on Thursday.
Homeland Security notified Ohio University Police that the aircraft was landing at the airport without proper authorization around 2:30 P.M. Police said that the pilot claimed he was traveling through U.S. airspace when a mechanical issue forced him to land.
Ohio University airport is not a port of entry, which led Customs and Border Protection to request that those on the plane be detained until federal agents could investigate.
Authorities quickly discovered a “significant quantity” of what they believed to be cocaine hidden in the aircraft, Ohio University Police say.
Both suspects and the contraband are currently in custody of Homeland Security.
