Khari Gordon, 22, was arrested on Monday night after shooting Captain Michael Schulman and Jeffrey Martin. Luckily, both officers survived.
In bodycam footage of their exchange, after being asked repeatedly by Captain Schulman , 50, to take his hands out of his pockets, Gordon is heard firing his gun at the 50-year-old who then falls to the ground, calling for backup. He then shot Officer Martin, 22, before fleeing the scene on foot.
Schulman was shot in the armpit and Martin was shot in the hand. Both were taken to the hospital. Schulman, a father of two who has been with the Lavonia Police Department since 2001, remains in intensive care unit with a punctured lung. As of this writing, there have been no updates on Captain Schulman’s condition. Officer Martin was discharged from the hospital but must undergo special surgery to remove a bullet from his hand. Martin is an army veteran who joined the force less than a year ago. The Georgia Burea of Investigation says their injuries are not life-threatening. Authorities say the officers were trying to pull over a vehicle after learning the car was stolen. The GBI said the vehicle eventually stopped at the Zaxby’s restaurant. That’s when Gordon pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and fired at officers, striking both.
Luckily, Gordon has been arrested and is in custody. Similarly, Gordon was denied bond at Tuesday’s hearing after the judge said the court found him to be a significant threat to the public.
Hopefully, the public never has to worry about this guy again.
