Oscars Ratings Drop to an All-Time Low in 2020

The 2020 Oscars took place on Sunday, February 9, with a history-making event at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Parasite took home the award for Best Picture. The film became the first-ever foreign-language film to take home the most coveted prize at the award ceremony. Parasite also took home Best International Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, and earned Bong Joon-ho the Best Director award.

Unfortunately for the 92nd Academy Awards, the ratings for the broadcast of the awards ceremony reached an all-time low.

According to a report from the New York Post, 23.6 million people tuned in to the Oscars which was down from 29.6 million viewers a year ago.

From the report:

The broadcast, which ran for three hours and 35 minutes, scored a 5.3 rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demo, based on Nielsen’s Live + Same Day Fast National ratings. In 2019, the first year the show went on without a host, it saw an 11% overall viewership bump over the year prior, with 29.6 million viewers. It also scored a 7.7 rating among the 18-49 demographic.

The news comes at a time when the Oscars continued to take strong political stances with decisive political speeches throughout its broadcast.

Did your favorite film, actor, actress, or director take home a big award?
