Jarrod Ramos, 38, has been identified as the suspected shooter in the incident which reportedly left at least five people dead and several more “gravely injured” in Annapolis, Maryland. NBC News and CBS News were among the first to confirm his identity. On Thursday, June 25, police responded to an active shooter situation at the Capital Gazette News building. The incident took place outside of the Capital Gazette newsroom. According to FOX 46, “Anne Arundel County police said the shots fired report came in at about 2:35 p.m. in the 800 block of Bestgate Road near the Westfield Annapolis Mall.”
Ramos reportedly had a history of abusing and harassing women.

The Capital Gazette had received threats on social media earlier in the day, according to law enforcement officials. It was not immediately known whether the suspect was the person responsible for the threats.
Shortly after police responded to the active shooter situation, reports surfaced that the suspect was apprehended and taken into custody.
According to the Ann Arundel County radio traffic scanner audio, the gunman was described as a “white male with a ponytail.” CBS News added that the suspect was not carrying an ID at the time the shooting was carried out. He initially refused to identify himself to officials and had reportedly damaged his fingerprints so he could not be identified — however, those reports have been disputed by law enforcement officials. He was reportedly identified via facial recognition software.
The 38-year-old had a previous interaction with officials at the Capital Gazette newspaper where he allegedly sued the paper for defamation, according to CNN. Details on his unsuccessful defamation suit can be seen here.

It was the 154th mass shooting in the United States this year.
The tragedy comes just 48 hours after right-wing provocateur told multiple news outlets, “I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight.”
The shooter “was apprehended trying to evade law enforcement, he was hiding underneath a desk in the facility of the newspaper,” according to Elise Garofalo, a producer for CNN’s “Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”
“One of my deputy sheriff K9 handlers made an apprehension of a suspect. It is an active investigation, it is unfolding as we speak,” according to Anne Arundel Sheriff Ron Bateman, via FOX News. A shotgun was reportedly used during the shooting. Along with the shotgun, fake grenades were found on the suspect’s person, according to a senior law enforcement official.
Witnesses inside of the building say the gunman reloaded. He also used smoke grenades in the attack, according to police officials during a late-night briefing. A bag of smoke grenades was found inside of the Capital Gazette building.
A motive is not currently known, though multiple fatalities were confirmed and it was believed to be a targeted attack on the newspaper with the gunman looking for his victims. However, it was not known whether the specific victims were targeted.

Twitter user @amesscapgaz, who is reportedly an intern at the Capitol Gazette, was first to bring attention to the ongoing situation, tweeting out: “active shooter 888 Bestgate please help us” at 2:43 p.m. EST.
Capital Gazette reporter Phil Davis, who covers courts and crimes, tweeted out: “A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead… Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees.” He later added, “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad.”
A huge police presence surrounding the Capital Gazette building could immediately be seen on social media.

The Capital Gazette building is located on the 800 block of Bestgate Rd. in Annapolis.
