Capital Gazette Active Shooting Victims: Names, Photos & Details

This past Thursday, an active shooter injured at least four people at Maryland’s Capital Gazette newspaper building, with staff confirming the incident on social media as it was happening. After one suspect was taken into police custody, officials have started to name the victims hurt during the incident.

John McNamara

The Daily Mail confirmed that one of the victims was John McNamara, who identified as having worked for the Gazette and as the editor of the Bowie Blade-News and the Crofton-West County Gazette. During early reports of the story, it was unclear if he was injured or a fatality. The New York Post later confirmed he lost his life in the shooting.

According to The New York Post, Hiaasen was one of the victims who lost their life in the shooting was Rob Hiaasen. He was a columnist and assistant editor at the Gazette, having previously worked at The Palm Beach Post. He was 59 years old at the time of his death.


Wendi Winters

According to The New York Post, Winters was one of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting; she was identified as an editor for the publication.


Rebecca Smith

Gerald Fischman

According to NBC San Diego, there were at least five confirmed deaths from the shooting, although the names of the deceased have not been released to the public. In addition, police have not yet officially released the name of a suspect relating to the incident, who is also currently in police custody, at this time.
On his official Twitter account, President Donald Trump issued the following statement:

“Prior to departing Wisconsin, I was briefed on the shooting at Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. Thank you to all of the First Responders who are currently on the scene.”
