Say what you want about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell – believe me, we could say a lot about the guy – but there’s no denying that he’s been good for business. NFL revenues hovered around $13 billion in 2016, up more than 50% from 2010. By 2027, Goodell is hoping that number is $25 billion.

1982 – 2005

Goodell began his NFL career in 1982 as an administrative intern in the league office. Five years later, he secured the position of assistant to the president of the American Football Conference (AFC), Lamar Hunt. Then commissioner Paul Tagliabue took Goodell under his wing and had him fill a variety of football and business operations roles.
Goodell began his career in pro football as an intern at the NFL office in 1982, then worked in the New York Jets’ public relations department in 1983. He returned to the league office in 1984 in the public relations department and at one point was in charge of distributing media credentials for postseason games.
Goodell worked his way through the ranks and was appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer by Tagliabue in 2001. He oversaw the league’s football operations and officiating departments and supervised all league business functions.
In 2001, Goodell was appointed as the NFL’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. As the NFL’s COO, Goodell was in charge of the league’s operations and officiating while also overseeing the league’s business functions. This included NFL Ventures, a sub-group of the league that supervises business units, media properties, marketing and sales, stadium development and strategic planning.

Goodell was chosen to succeed the retiring Tagliabue as NFL commissioner on August 8, 2006. Goodell, 58, took over for Paul Tagliabue in 2006. His original five-year contract was extended in 2009, and then again in 2012.
Based on tax filings for the NFL, Goodell has been compensated more than $150 million in salary and bonuses during his first eight years as NFL commissioner (Tom Brady earned $99.3 million in the same period). In 2016, Goodell took a pay cut of nearly $1 million and earned a salary of $34.1 million.
