Two of the country’s top basketball programs are set to face off in a tough second round matchup in the East region, as the (1) Villanova Wildcats will take on the (8) Wisconsin Badgers. A trip to the Sweet Sixteen is on the line, which is a milestone that both teams are very familiar with reaching. The Wildcats made it there last year en route to their 2016 National Championship, while the Badgers have reached the Sweet Sixteen in three consecutive seasons.
Villanova got off to a sluggish start in their first round game, taking only a 30-29 lead into halftime against (16) Mount St. Mary’s. Whatever Jay Wright said in the locker room must’ve worked, though, as the Wildcats ended up cruising to a 76-56 victory.
Even though Wisconsin defeated (9) Virginia Tech by 10 points, the game was much closer than the final score of 84-74. Wisconsin held just a 74-73 lead with 2:25 remaining in the second half before a late rally and some free throws put the game out of reach. Bronson Koenig was the hero for the Badgers, hitting eight three-pointers and scoring 28 points.
