We’ve got two teams left in the Big 12 Tournament, as #11 West Virginia will take on #23 Iowa State in the championship game. Most pundits thought that #1 Kansas was a lock to appear in the finals, but the TCU Horned Frogs had other plans, pulling off a huge upset.
Both West Virginia and Iowa State took pretty similar paths to get to the Big 12 Tournament championship game. Along with Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State finished the regular season in a three-way tie for second place with 12-6 records in conference play.
After the tiebreakers were determined, the Mountaineers were given the #2 seed and Iowa State the #4 seed. Both teams received first round byes, so they’ve only needed to win two games to get to the finals.
West Virginia beat #10 Texas 63-53 in the quarterfinals and #6 Kansas State 51-50 in the semifinals, while Iowa State beat #5 Oklahoma State 92-83 in the quarterfinals and #8 TCU 84-63 in the semifinals. This will be the third meting between the Mountaineers and Cyclones this season, and West Virginia has held the upper hand thus far. On January 31, West Virginia beat Iowa State at their place 85-72, and on March 3, the Mountaineers prevailed over the Cyclones on Senior Night with an 87-76 win.
