Bicycle Race Crash Sends Cyclist Over The Edge, Forcing Him To Hold On For Dear Life

Talk about worst case scenario. Was the possibility of a crash occurring on the bridge not considered? Maybe put some temporary guardrails up or something? I know life is 20/20 hindsight, and I don’t know the logistics of crashes during cycle races, but I’m just spitballing here when I say maybeeee they should have been better prepared for this.

A cyclist was left hanging on to a bridge over a 30-foot drop after a “spectacular crash” sent his bike over the wall and into a dry creek bed below during the final sprint of the Santa Barbara County Road Race, Cat 3 on Saturday.
Peter Aquino, who finished 23rd in the race, captured footage of the scary moment when racers crashed and very nearly sent one racer to his death, or in the very least to the hospital with serious injuries

The Carefast/Storck Cycling Team identified the rider as team manager Mike Allec of Fullerton, California. The team wrote on Facebook:

“Mike Allec was involved in a spectacular crash in the final sprint that left him hanging off of a bridge above a ravine (30ft below). We are very thankful for the outpouring support from many who were there and more importantly those that helped him off of the bridge.

Yeah, spectacular is one word for it.
