The 2016-2017 Premier League season’s second-week kicks off today with Manchester United facing off against Southampton. Manchester United, who finished in fifth place last season, are coming off an opening-week victory over Premier League new comers Bournemouth , winning 3-1. Southampton, who placed 6th last season, was tied their opening match. Southampton tied Watford, 1-1. Both Manchester United and Southampton will be competing in Europa League play this season. This will be Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s competitive home debut as United boss at Old Trafford.
The 2016–17 Premier League is the 25th season of the Premier League, the top English professional league for association football clubs, since its establishment in 1992. The season began August 13, 2016, and will last until May 21, 2017. Leicester City are the defending champions, with Burnley, Middlesbrough and Hull City being promoted from the Football League Championship. Rounding out the top four from last season, are Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester City.
