Watch: Bill De Blassio Won't Be Killing a Groundhog this Year

Earlier today Mayor de Blasio made his way to Staten Island to attend his second Groundhog Day ceremony. Thankfully it was nowhere near as horrific as last year’s, when he tried his best to hold the squirming animal but instead let it plummet face first into the ground. Seven days later Charlotte – that furry little creature – died of acute internal injuries.

This year the NYC mayor was banned from getting his grubby little paws on the groundhog, and instead had to stare longingly at Staten Island Chuck while it was secured inside of a plexiglass box. How awkward.
