Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim–of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! fame–are now famous enough to land on The Tonight Show. Of course, nobody can just show up on the Tonight Show and be a guest during the Jimmy Fallon era. Everyone needs to do some kind of schtick. In the case of Tim & Eric, it was a long setup about how Eric had no idea that he was going to be on the show, and Tim surprising him by keeping him blindfolded and in noise-canceling earphones all day.
The result is some classic awkward comedy, and you can watch Jimmy Fallon to see how NBC still makes sure that he’s keeping the audience comfortable at home by being a generic talk-show host at heart. By which we mean that Tim & Eric were able to take the gag as far as they could without Jimmy being sure to yuck it up in the background–since we have to assume that anyone watching The Tonight Show needs that kind of reassurance. Otherwise, they’d already be tuned in to Adult Swim.
Anyway, we’re sure that Tim & Eric had something darker in mind, but this all still kind of works, and it’s nice to see Tim & Eric still getting a push to become big stars–which might never happen, but let’s keep watching them try…
