Planet of the Apes Makeup Video

The new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stars a bunch of people who wore green body suits with little dots on them so that a computer technician could later turn them into monkeys. That’s cool. This video, however, gives you an idea of how it was done back in 1968 for the original Planet of the Apes. It was not easy. This isn’t even the original makeup, either. This is just a modern take on the old-school way that it was done.

It’s still not the high quality that made the original Planet of the Apes a real classic, but it’s still kind of cool. The makeup artists do a pretty fine job. Things got worse for the original Planet of the Apes series. By the time of 1973’s Battle for the Planet of the Apes, there were budget cuts that had nearly all of the extras wearing rubber masks that look like something you’d buy at Walmart. We went to a Planet Hollywood in Florida once that supposedly featured the original Planet of the Apes appliances for actor Maurice Evans, and it was one of the Battle masks. We were pissed…
