Neil Young & Jack White Embrace '40s Tech With Jimmy Fallon [VIDEO]

Well, it’s nice to see things get surreal on late-night television, and Jimmy Fallon brought some real weirdness to The Tonigth Show last night. Fresh off the instant record that he made for Record Store Day, Jack White visited Fallon (and lead guest Louis C.K.) with Neil Young in tow to make another instant record using the 1940s-era Voice-o-Graph recording booth. These kinds of things used to be common at State Fairs, and a young Elvis Presley used one to record a present for his mother. 
The Tonight Show appearance, though, was about Jack White & Neil Young recording another instant record made to get out to record stores quickly. Young recorded his new album A Letter Home entirely on the device, and Jimmy and Louis were given a quick introduction to how it works….

And then Neil recorded a take on Willie Nelson’s classic country tune “Crazy”–which we’re thinking will also be quickly sent out to record stores…

We should note that there was a punk-rock band back in 1977 called Warsaw Pakt who did a similar stunt, but it took an entire 22 hours before their debut (and only) LP made it into stores. Jack White got his Record Store Day release into the shops even faster. Anyway, it’s nice to see this kind of weirdness on late-night television where it belongs. It’s also nice to see Jack White happy. We’ve seen him in concert a few times lately, and he sure seemed miserable. He was probably wishing that he was in a Voice-o-Graph.
