ABOUT Amelia
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Senior
MY COLLEGE KICKS ASS BECAUSE…
Well that’s easy! U of I is a school that is rich in tradition and just downright awesome. I am actually from Dallas, TX and transferred to Illinois after attending a southern school my freshmen year. I transferred to U of I because it is not only an amazing Big 10 university, but I was also given the opportunity to be the first feature baton twirler in ten years for the Marching Illini Marching Band. I have twirled since I was four years old, and my dream has always been to twirl for a major university and now I get to be on the field every football game for the Fighting Illini. It’s a dream come true! I also love how big the student body is, yet there are endless opportunities to meet people and get involved on campus. It is a great environment both academically and socially.
THE MOST MEMORABLE THING I’VE DONE SINCE FRESHMAN YEAR IS…
The most memorable thing I have done was lead the Marching Illini Marching Band down the streets of Dublin, Ireland in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, this year we will be performing in the 89th Macy’s Day Parade, so that will definitely take Dublin’s place in a few months as my most memorable experience. I am so excited!
I MAJOR IN…
I am majoring in broadcast journalism, and I want to one day be hired by a major television network as an anchor or talk show host.
OH YEAH, AND YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW THAT…
I am currently Miss Central Illinois and actually competed on the Miss America stage this past summer and made the top ten! I loved being a representative not only for my school, but for the state. The volunteering opportunities and friendships that I gained made this an amazing experience!
AT SCHOOL, I’M INVOLVED IN…
Aside from twirling for my school, I am a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. I volunteer and mentor girls with the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois and Children’s Miracle Network through the Miss America Organization. I am also the host for our campus talk show, SeeYou Weekly, and I intern for Champaign’s CBS affiliate, WCIA.
WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE MISS COED 2016?
I am no stranger to competition and pageants, but the opportunity to be Miss COED 2016 would give me the unique opportunity to give back to my school and continue being a representative of U of I! To me, that’s the best crown of all!
IF YOU COULD GIVE OUR READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Never underestimate the power of a smile. I found that when I smile and share that smile for others, I genuinely feel happier and it is so easy to share that with others. It’s so easy to do and you’ll make anyone’s day!
