An 18-year-old man killed nine people and injured 27 others in a shooting rampage in Munich, Germany on Friday night. The shooting took place in the Moosach district of Munich, northwest of the city center. The police have identified the killer, who was born in Germany and held dual German and Iranian citizenship.
The shooting began at about 5:50 p.m. local time at a McDonald’s restaurant before the gunman moved to the Olympia Shopping Center across the street and continued firing. Most of the victims were killed there. He fled the shopping mall, and though there was a shootout with police, he was dead of a suspected self-inflicted gun wound at 8:30 p.m.
All of the victims were from the Munich area and most were young. Three were 14 years old, two were 15, and the others were 17, 19, 20 and 45.
According to the New York Times, Police and prosecutors said there was no evidence that his shooting rampage Friday evening at a McDonald’s and a nearby mall was driven by religion or the contention surrounding immigration that has erupted recently in German politics and society. Unlike several high-profile recent attacks worldwide, the authorities believe there is no link to ISIS or direct inspiration from the militant Islamic terrorist group.
The authorities said a search of his home found newspaper articles on rampage killings and the German edition of “Why Kids Kill: Inside the Minds of School Shooters.” It is suspected that the shooter was inspired by Anders Breivik, as the shooting took place on the five-year anniversary of when Breivik killed 77 people in a bombing and shooting rampage.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Saturday it appeared the attacker had likely hacked a woman’s Facebook account to post a false “special offer” for discounts to lure people to the McDonald’s. Investigators were still working to confirm that is what took place, de Maiziere said.
The shooting continues a disturbing uptick in mass killings across the world, and particularly in Europe, in the past few months.
