It was nearly a year ago that Mortal Kombat X kicked down the doors of the Xbox One and PS4 and showed what current-gen hardware could really do with a fighting game. With a combination of fluid fighting, wildfire specials and blistering finishing moves, the game revitalized the franchise for this generation. Steady updates since release have rolled out new fighters and modes, making the game stronger as it has aged. Now comes Mortal Kombat XL, which combines all that DLC into one package and promises more tantalizing improvements to come.

Buy the re-released, expanded game and you get not only all the good stuff you may have missed since launch, but season pass-style access to everything coming along. If you’ve stuck with the base game all along, you’ve missed out on some of the wild possibilities that expansions have brought. You can be excused for standing pat, because it’s annoying to keep coughing up more money for piecemeal add-ons, especially in a game as packed with micro-transactions as Mortal Kombat X. Ludicrous impulse offerings include a pack of one-button finishes for $5.
Previously paid DLC characters such as Predator, Jason Voorhees, Tremor and Tanya — along with their accompanying alternate outfits and skins — greatly add to the mix of possibilities that pop up when plowing through arcade mode or taking on all comers online. You can also take control of the gargantuan, four-armed boss character Goro and Kold War Scorpion. New characters coming later on include the Alien Xenomorph, Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface, Triborg and Bo’Rai Cho.
Having easily fended off the half-finished Street Fighter V as king of the hill in Xbox One/PS4 fighters, Mortal Kombat XL comes at just the right time to tighten its deathgrip on the genre and revitalized a game that had grown a little stale.
While you can do without the add-ons and still enjoy one of the best fighters ever created, you’re missing out if you don’t check out the latest version, which draws fighting fans in with the command of harpoon-wielding Scorpion yelling “c’mere!”
