According to the University of New Hampshire, the term “American” can be problematic.
According to a “Bias-Free Language Guide,” the term causes an issue because it joins “illegal alien,” “mothering,” “fathering,” and numerous other words the university apparently frowns upon for some reason or another. Instead, school officials encourage students to use “U.S. citizen” or “Resident of the U.S.”
They insist that using the term “American” assumes that the U.S. is the only country inside both North and South America. WTF?! Enough with the political correctness people, it’s ruining the world.
According to Washington Times,
UNH’s ‘Bias-Free Language Guide’ also includes sections on how to navigate ‘microaggression,’ and gender issues. Those aggressions are broken down into the categories ‘micro-assault,’ ‘micro-insult,” and “micro-invalidation.’
‘Micro-aggressions hold a lot of power and especially because of their frequency in our culture. They may appear subtle and harmless, but we must address them if we wish to consider ourselves a truly civil society,’ the guide says, suggesting students try to use ‘micro-affirmations’ instead.”
Our heads hurt. But we still have one thing to say – give us a f*cking break.
