It’s been a while since anyone cared about a Japanese ghost story, but that’s changed with Takashi Miike’s Over Your Dead Body–where the legendary Japanese filmmaker has put a deadly modern spin on an old ghost story from Japan. Yet another wild cinematic detour from madly prolific Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, Over Your Dead Body unfolds within the walls of a theatre where a troupe of players are in rehearsals for a production of “Yotsuya Kaidan,” a 200-year-old tale of murder, betrayal, and phantasmagorical vengeance — and where life comes to imitate art in spooky and ultimately shocking ways. As theatre and life begin to intertwine, the film builds to a nightmarish finale that only a filmmaker as perversely brilliant as Miike could have envisioned.
The critics were sure impressed, and we’re mostly bummed out that this thing won’t be making its way to NYC in time for Halloween. We’re still going to be geeking out with our fellow Japanese horror fans, and then pushing it on guys who’ll laugh at us until there’s an American remake.
