The continuing saga of the Washington Redskins and their team name took another interesting turn on Wednesday when former NFL referee Mike Carey came out saying that he requested not to work any Washington games because of the nickname. Carey retired after 24 years at the end of last season and had not worked a Redskins game since 2006. This is something that slipped through the cracks for people who pay attention to where referees are at on a weekly basis. There has to be a lot of credit to Carey though for taking a stand and not wanting to be involved in any Washington games however. Most would just do their job and say nothing.
It was probably best that Carey didn’t do any Washington games it sounds like because he would have already had an agenda against them because of the name. It is surprising the league actually agreed to it however and didn’t just tell Carey that he had to do those games. It is just another piece of the whole Washington possibly changing their team name puzzle.
