New York Mets' Daniel Murphy Criticized For Attending Birth Of Son

There are certain times when a professional athlete should take time away from their team–like when their first child is born. New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy did just that before Opening Day this week, and missed the first two games of the season to see his son be born. The reaction though has been overwhelming against Murphy with sports talk hosts criticizing him for missing two games.
The criticism is unfair without any doubt. There are 162 games in the regular season so missing two games or a very small percentage isn’t going to hurt anyone. Murphy wanted to be at something that he will never get the chance to see again. He had a right to be there and did the right thing by staying by his wife’s bedside.
It proves once again that some people who sit behind a microphone all day are just blowing hot air and don’t know what they are talking about. Murphy’s wife and young son Noah are doing well–and Murphy returned to the team on Thursday where he promptly got a hit in his first at-bat. So we’re cool, right?
