Gillibrand was born and raised in Albany, New York, where she graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, New York in 1984. After her high school graduation, Gillibrand began attending Dartmouth College.
While at Dartmouth, Gillibrand majored in Asian Studies and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She eventually graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1988. After Dartmouth, Gillibrand attended the UCLA School of Law and passed the bar exam to become a licensed attorney in 1991.
After passing the bar exam, Gillibrand joined the New York City-based law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.
Following her stint with em>Davis Polk & Wardwell, Gillibrand made the jump into politics when she took a job as Special Counsel to Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and worked on HUD’s Labor Initiative and New Markets Initiative.
In the year 1999, Gillibrand began working for Hillary Clinton’s 2000 United States Senate campaign.
After working on the Clinton Senate campaign, Gillibrand became a partner at New York City’s Boies, Schiller & Flexner law firm.
