Anthony Rauda, a 42-year-old ex-convict, was charged with murder on Monday, January 7, after he allegedly shot and killed father-of-two Tristan Beaudette on June 22. Rauda was also charged with 10 counts of attempted murder and five counts of second-degree burglary.
What Happened?
According to the LA County District Attorney’s Office, Rauda shot Beaudette in the head on Friday, June 22, as he was sleeping in a tent with his two daughters while camping at the Malibu Creek State Park in California.
While Beaudette’s 2-and-4-year-old daughters were not injured in the shooting, they are listed as victims of attempted murder in the felony complaint. Police say they believe Rauda picked his victims “at random.”
Investigators say that Rauda was a “survivalist” who lived off stolen food while often sleeping outside in the Malibu area. Additionally, while investigating the shooting, authorities were able to connect the homicide with a series of shootings in Malibu Creek State Park dating to November 2016.

Rauda was arrested in October in a ravine near the park dressed in black and carrying a rifle in his backpack. After his arrest in October, Rauda was sentenced to nearly a year in jail for violating probation and illegally having a gun and ammunition, said Shiara Davila-Morales of the district attorney’s office.
But the investigation remained open as authorities looked into whether he was connected to the shootings that seemed to target people at random. The shootings date to November 2016, when a wildlife biologist was struck in the arm while sleeping in a hammock near the park.
Rauda is now charged in the hammock shooting that wounded James Rogers and in opening fire days later on someone sleeping in a car. He is accused of shooting at three other cars in 2017.
Who Is Anthony Rauda?

Following his arrest, Rauda’s bail was set at $1.1 million and he is scheduled to appear back in court on January 22. At the time of this writing, Rauda has not entered a plea.
