The United States Geological Survey reports that a 6.7 magnitude earthquake has just hit Anchorage, Alaska. Some reports indicate that the magnitude of the Earthquake went as high as 7.2.
The quake — which had a reported depth of 26.7 miles — hit south of Point MacKenzie, Alaska. The epicenter of the quake was located 7 miles from Anchorage, which is the largest city in Alaska with an approximate population of 290,000 people.
Anchorage is home to more than 40 percent of the state’s total population.
At this time, the National Weather Service of Anchorage has said because of the aftershock, the Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for all of the Cook Inlet. The tsunami warning has since been canceled.
At this time, no injuries, fatalities, or major structural damage has been reported.
Speaking to CNN, Kjerstin Lastufka, a spokeswoman at Alaska Regional Hospital, said that the hospital is assessing the main building and offices on campus.
“We’re seeing some cracks in the walls and some cracks in the floors, and a little bit of water leaks.”
