Timothy Trybus, a 62-year-old man from Cook County, Illinois, has been charged with a hate crime. Trybus first found himself as a viral sensation for all of the wrong reasons when video surfaced of him harassing a woman, Mia Irizarry, for wearing a Puerto Rico shirt. Trybus went on a racist rant, before being charged with misdemeanor assault for the verbal harassment.
However, on Thursday, July 12, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office said that Trybus has also been charged with two counts of felony hate crime.

In the video, Trybus confronts the woman asking why she is wearing a Puerto Rico shirt in the United States. Despite police officers being on the scene and Puerto Rico being a part of the United States, Trybus continued his racist rant by wrongly claiming Puerto Rico wasn’t part of the USA and asking Ms. Irizarry, “Are you a citizen? Are you a United States citizen?”

Irizarry was asking a park police officer for help and repeatedly said that she felt uncomfortable until a female police officer finally intervened. The park police officer initially walked away from the verbal altercation. The officer who was seen walking away from the scene, Patrick Connor, resigned Wednesday night ahead of a disciplinary hearing he was scheduled to face on Thursday.
This is just the latest string of racially charged public altercations in recent months. including Tabby Duncan, a racist waitress; Lori McAllen, a racist Oregon DOT employee; and many more.
