Oliver Funez, bornOliver Mauricio Funes Machada, is a North Carolina teenager who has been charged with the murder of his mother after he was found walking down the street with her severed head in one hand and a bloody knife in the other. Funez, 18, called 911 to tell police he had just killed his mother at their home in Franklin County, North Carolina.
“It looked to be a large butcher knife, the weapon that was used,” said Sheriff Kent Winstead.
Franklin County Sheriff Kent Winstead said Funez is being charged with first-degree murder. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the responding officer found the decapitated body of 35-year-old Yesenia Funez Beatriz Machado. Another two young siblings were found at the home but fortunately, they were unharmed. A fourth child was at school.
The killing happened around 1:00 P.M. at 90 Morgan Drive in the Pilot community near Zebulon, according to Winstead.

Neighbors were also stunned by the news of the death.
“Complete and utter shock. Pilot, Zebulon this whole area is a quiet area and I didn’t know what to expect when I got home and saw police cars and everything around,” said Ryan Reader, a neighbor.
Funez is being held in a local jail and it is unknown whether or not Funez has an attorney. Authorities say the other children are with their father.
“It’s a terrible situation for the family, a terrible situation for the neighborhood and this county. I’m just glad things worked out the way they did and no one else was hurt in taking the suspect into custody,” Winstead said.
Crime scene analysis was delayed for a couple hours because the Sheriff’s Office had to go to a neighboring county inorder to obtain a search warrant. Sheriff Winstead said a judge signed the order around 4:15 PM.
North Carolina prosecutors are seeking mental evaluation of the 18-year-old. While Franklin County District Attorney Mike Waters told WRAL that Machada’s “mental state will be a primary interest” over the next few weeks, he conceded that it could take months to determine Funez’s mental state. Furthmore, Waters said he has reviewed the recording of the 911 call, although he will not release it.
