Bryson DeChambeau Shot Proves Golf Is the Hardest Sport in the World

Bryson DeChambeau’s been talking about his future with LIV Golf lately — he’s got one year left on his contract and hasn’t committed beyond that. After what happened Thursday at the league’s 2026 season opener in Adelaide, he might need a few more days to think it over.

DeChambeau’s tied for the lead at The Grange East Course after shooting a 6-under 66. That’s the good news.

The bad news? He hit one of the most embarrassing shots you’ll see from a professional golfer, much less a guy who’s won multiple majors.

Bryson DeChambeau Hits Brutal Drive Then Incredible Recovery Shot

The 10th hole is a par 5. DeChambeau grabbed his driver and completely topped the ball — it flew maybe five feet off the ground before skipping down the fairway like a stone across water.

“Did I hit the ground on that, or just knuckleball?” he asked, staring at his driver with genuine confusion.

The tee shot traveled just 245 yards. For context, that’s more than 100 yards shorter than what you’d normally expect from DeChambeau in that situation. He was left staring down a 278-yard approach for his second shot.

Then things got interesting.

Because he’s Bryson DeChambeau, he absolutely crushed a 3-wood 288 yards on his second shot. That left him with a 30-foot eagle putt, which he nearly made before tapping in for birdie.

It’s recovery shots like that which make him the league’s biggest draw. Despite the shank, despite the awkward questions about his future, he’s still pulling off the kind of golf that keeps people watching.

DeChambeau recently addressed his future with LIV after the league announced it’s shifting from 54-hole to 72-hole events — a major format change from what players originally signed up for.

“I’ve got a contract for this year, and we’ll go through it there and see what happens after that. Look, it’s 72 holes, it’s changed, but we’re still excited to play professionally and play for what we’re doing and go across the world…Is it what we ultimately signed up for? No. So I think we’re supposed to be different, so I’m a little indifferent to it right now.”

Translation: he’s not exactly thrilled with the direction things are headed.
