From the 1940s to the 1960s, the Western genre ruled the roost. Indeed, this period of cinema was referred to as the Golden Age of the Western, and there were countless pictures based on the American frontier.
The genre fell out of fashion, though, and has failed to hit the same highs in the decades since. There are now some indications that it could be set for a return.
Western Games are Everywhere in the Casino Sector
The online casino industry is one of the most common benchmarks to gauge the popularity of a genre in the modern age. The slot market is hugely competitive, and developers need to produce content that they know will attract a lot of players. To do this, slots often conform to the same genres and make adaptations or references to popular culture or well-regarded media.
Of the new exclusive slot games on the market, 2 Wild 2 Die is a standout title. The offering from Hacksaw Gaming uses a Western theme, as the studio knew this would be an instant hit among players. It joins several other popular Wild West-themed slots, including classics like Wild West Wilds and Wild West Gold. The genre leads the way in the online casino industry and implies that Western-themed slots and entertainment are in the ascendancy in popular culture. It’s not surprising to see that many directors and television companies are opting to revisit Western themes.
Some of the Best Recent Films Have Been Westerns
Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained was an excellent tribute to the spaghetti westerns of old, and it highlighted how the genre is so ripe for modern adaptations and twists. Homages to classic Western movies are on the rise, and Western movies are known for garnering critical acclaim and boosting the careers of the featured actors.
Various Westerns are considered among the best movies of the last few decades. No Country For Old Men is often considered among the Coen brother’s best works, and the directorial duo recently released the much-loved Ballad of Buster Scruggs as well. The Revenant in 2015, Hell or High Water in 2016, and The Power of the Dog in 2021 are also outstanding recent entries to the Western genre and subvert key features of the genre to adapt the stories to our modern times.
Western Series are Growing in Popularity Too
It’s not just movies that are witnessing a grand return of the Western. There are also plenty of amazing titles on television that are helping with the genre’s resurgence. The limited series Godless is an unmissable title on Netflix, and then there’s HBO’s Westworld which offers an epic twist on the traditional Western formula. Yellowstone highlights how modern Westerns can be popular too, and that show has already inspired various spinoffs.
There’s no doubt that the Western is on the way back in popular culture. Along with the countless options in the gaming industry, there are plenty of movies and television series that are attracting high viewing figures. There could soon be a new golden age for Westerns.
