Bingo is a game that virtually everyone knows and understands, but if you’ve only ever seen it on television then you might have a false impression of it. What are some of the most interesting ways that bingo is presented that aren’t true to real life?
Everyone Playing in the Same Room or Hall
It’s fair to say that during most of its history bingo was played as we see on TV shows and in movies, with all of the players sitting together in a single place and marking off their cards. While it can still be played in this way, the massive popularity of online bingo has so far been missed by TV show writers and could make for interesting scenes in the future.
This way of playing has led to innovations such as themed online bingo rooms and bingo promos players can claim. The latter category has offers that include free bingo games, boosted prizes and other worthwhile benefits. This encourages new players to sign up and also gives existing members another reason to return for some more games.
The Bingo Caller Starting to Ramble or Rave
Bingo callers have traditionally been a big part of the entertainment factor in this game, shouting out the numbers as they’re drawn and often using amusing phrases for certain numbers. Yet, for some reason the most memorable bingo scenes, such as those in The Babadook and Better Call Saul, involve the person running the game going completely off-track.
In truth, modern bingo games are run professionally and the idea of a caller starting to rant and rave about other stuff is quite far-fetched. We also need to remember that with the many games played online these days there is no caller present, so this trope becomes even less likely to occur in real life now than it was before.

Players So Absorbed in the Game That They Don’t Notice Anything Else
There’s no doubt that bingo is the sort of game that players get fully absorbed in, as they put their full concentration into marking off the numbers they need for a winning line or a full house. Yet, scriptwriters often seem keen to take this to the extreme by suggesting that the players are completely oblivious to everything else going on around them.
This is shown in a hugely unrealistic scene in Rampage where a guy in full combat gear walks around the hall and no one even notices him. However, according to comments on a clip of the film on YouTube, there’s a twist here as it turns out that the players in this scene were filmed in a real bingo hall and many of them were so caught up in the game that they never even noticed the filming going on.
It’s clear that the modern way of playing bingo online is likely to be shown in TV shows and movies in the future, but these examples show that it’s sometimes difficult to work out which scenes are realistic and which aren’t.
