Sergio Salas: High School Teen Commits Suicide at School

Sergio Salas, a 14-year-old student at Monett High School in Missouri, was found dead on school property. According to the Joplin Globe, no foul play is suspected and it is believed that Salas committed suicide in a field on school property.

Salas was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“No foul play is suspected,” Monett Police Chief George Daoud said. “No students were in danger at any time.”

While there is no foul play suspected, authorities will be investigating the death.

The report read:

Monett Police Chief George Daoud reported that officers responded at 5:19 p.m. on Monday to a report of an unattended death. The body of a teenage boy was found on Monett High School property, approximately 30 yards north of Twin Hills Drive. Daoud said the death appeared to be due to a gunshot wound. Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin took possession of the body for an autopsy.

The name of the victim has not been released.

“District counselors have been at [Monett Middle School] and in their buildings today to be available for students who are struggling,” said Mike Evans, assistant superintendent. “The Clark Center has also provided counselors for both our students and staff. Area churches and pastors have reached out to provide resources and support for the entire school community. A therapy dog has also been available.

“We’ve seen an amazing outreach of love and support from the community and we can’t thank everyone enough.”
