Iker Casillas, widely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of soccer, has been hospitalized after he reportedly suffered a heart attack while on the training ground with FC Porto.
At this time, Casillas, 37-years-old, is reportedly currently recovering in a hospital following emergency surgery.
Casillas, who spent a majority of his career winning countless individual and team awards at Real Madrid, won the World Cup with Spain in 2010. Casillas is one of only four Spanish soccer players in history to appear in four World Cups.
In addition to his World Cup triumph, Casillas won two European Championships with Spain (2008, 2012) and La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid. He also won two Copa Del Rey titles. In total, Casillas won 19 team trophies while at Real Madrid.
During the course of his illustrious, 20-year career, Casillas has played in over 1,000 career games.
Casillas was a mainstay at Real Madrid alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and David Beckham from 1999 to 2015 before moving to FC Porto in Portugal.
As a result of the heart attack, Casillas is not expected to feature in any of FC Porto’s remaining games this season.
Following word of his heart attack, teams and former teammates alike began to wish the goalkeeper well.
“Stay strong, @IkerCasillas! Our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery,” FC Barcelona tweeted.
“Get well soon my friend,” tweeted former Real Madrid teammate Gareth Bale.
Additionally, clubs around the world such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Roma tweeted well wishes to the incomparable Spanish keeper.
