Jeremy Richman, the 49-year-old father of Sandy Hook mass shooting victim Avielle Richman, was found dead of an apparent suicide outside of Edmond Town Hall in Newtown in the early hours of Monday, March 25.
According to a statement from the Newtown police department on Facebook, Richman — who had an office at the Edmond Town Hall —- was found dead outside around 7 a.m. local time.
Richman’s suicide comes just three days after Sydney Aiello, a teenage survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting, also took her own life in an apparent suicide.
While the Newtown police department did not disclose many details in their statement, they confirmed that “the death does not appear to be suspicious.”
Following the discovery of Richman’s body, he was transported to the Connecticut State Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy that is expected to be carried out today — Monday, March 25.
Richman’s daughter Avielle Richman was one of the 26 people who was tragically killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that was carried out by 20-year-old man Adam Lanza back in 2012.
Newtown police department lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde called Richman’s death “heartbreaking.”
“This is a heartbreaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole, the police department’s prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time,” Lt. Aaron Bahamonde said in a statement.
