Baylee Turner, a 23-year-old former high school teacher at Sarcoxie High School in Sarcoxie, Missouri, has been arrested and charged for allegedly having an illicit sexual relationship with a teenage student.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Turner allegedly had sex with an underage, unidentified student during the week of January 14. While the victim’s age or gender have not been disclosed, police say that the victim corroborated the timeline of the relationship.
Following an investigation, Turner was arrested by authorities around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, and had her bond set at $10,000.
The school district said that following an “emergency meeting”, Turner resigned from her position as a teacher at Sarcoxie High School on Monday, February 11.
Sarcoxie School District superintendent Kevin Goddard confirmed Turner’s resignation in an official statement.
“She resigned her position Sunday evening, and the (school) board accepted her resignation Monday evening,” Goddard said.
Turner has since been charged with sexual contact with a student by a school district employee, which punishable by up to four years in prison in the state of Missouri.
As for why there has been an increase in teacher’s being charged with sex-related crimes over recent years, studies suggest that smartphones are the primary reason for the spike in illicit relationships, as it allows teachers to communicate with the minors without supervision.
