Chelsie Leroy, a 23-year-old former teacher at Washburn High School in Wasburn, Missouri, has been arrested and charged for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage student.
According to reports, Leroy — who is from Washburn — has been charged with two counts of second-degree statutory rape and two counts of sexual contact with a student by a teacher after she allegedly had sex with a student while serving as a substitute teacher at Southwest High School.
In a statement, the Barry County Sheriff’s Office said that Leory sex with a teenager on the Southwest High School grounds on two separate occasions.
According to the Springfield News-Leader, Detective Angela Cole with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office said that the unidentified victim told investigating authorities that he had sex with Leroy on two separate occasions.
Due to the charges against her, a warrant has been issued for Leroy’s arrest and her bond has been set at $40,000.
As for why there has been an increase in teacher’s being charged with sex-related crimes over recent years, studies suggest that smartphones are the primary reason for the spike in illicit relationships, as it allows teachers to communicate with the minors without supervision.
