Ocasio-Cortez was born in the Bronx, New York City, on October 13, 1989, before eventually moving to a home in Yorktown Heights, a suburb in Westchester County. She attended Yorktown High School in Yorktown Heights, New York, where she graduated from in 2007.
Following her high school graduation from Yorktown High School, Ocasio-Cortez attended the prestigious Boston University, where she graduated cum lade with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a minor in economics in 2011.

On May 16, 2017, it was announced that Ocasio-Cortez would be running for Congress in New York’s 14th congressional district, making her the first person to challenge the Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley since 2004.
Ocasio-Cortez was sworn into the 116th Congress on Thursday, January 3. That same day, video of Ocasio-Cortez — which was recorded while she was a student at Boston University in 2010 — recreating the dance moves from The Breakfast Club went viral.
During her first day as a member of the 116th United States Congress, Ocasio-Cortez participated in a climate change protest outside the office of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, which she said made her so nervous she felt as if she could have “thrown up that morning.”
During her 60 Minutes interview on Sunday, January 6, Ocasio-Cortez said that President Donald Trump is a racist.
