The second the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve to usher in 2019, the world officially began the final year that would ever have new Game Of Thrones episodes, as the show’s eighth and final six-episode season will kick off in April. And some major details that were revealed in the season seven finale are set to have a major impact on the show’s final chapter, according to executive producer D.B. Weiss.
As we (the audience) now knows — but Jon and Daenerys do not — Jon Snow, not Daenerys Targaryen, is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, as he is not a bastard, but the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.
And that isn’t just some minor detail that either of them is going to let slide, as co-showrunner D.B. Weiss explained to TV Insider:
“From a dramatic standpoint, it makes things interesting, because the story is no longer about who Jon’s parents are. It’s about what happens when Jon finds out,” says Weiss.
“Jon is someone who plays by the book. He cannot lie,” Harington says. “Finding out about Dany would be very hard for him.”
Emilia Clarke, the actress who plays Daenerys Targaryen, agrees with Weiss, saying that her “lifelong dream has been to avenge her family and claim her rightful seat on the Iron Throne.” But if she were to find out that Jon’s — who she ‘truly loves’– claim to the throne, it would “cut deep.”
And knowing the Game Of Thrones we all know and love, we have a feeling that the secret of Jon’s heritage is going to be a little more than mere pillow talk between the two powerful leaders.
While Game Of Thrones highly-anticipated eighth and final season will premiere in April 2019, the exact release date has yet to be announced at this time.
