A former University of Nebraska-Lincoln student has sued the school’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter for an alleged rape that happened on Monday, October 22.
According to the lawsuit — which was filed in the Lancaster County District Court on Wednesday, November 21 — the unnamed victim says that she was sexually assaulted at one of SAE’s off-campus parties on October 22. The woman claims that the fraternity served her alcohol “to the point where she could no longer take care of herself.
Additionally, the woman says that she woke up at the SAE house on the morning of Tuesday, October 23 “to find she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown assailant.” The lawsuit states that the unknown assailant was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Furthermore, the lawsuit states that other members of the fraternity who were present “did not attempt to prevent the sexual assault.”
According to The Daily Nebraskan, the plaintiff said that she did not remember how she got back to campus after the party and that she reported the sexual assault to the UNL Police Department the next morning at 8:48 a.m.
The woman, who is seeking out undisclosed damages for mental and physical injuries and is also asking for $3,000 to cover her medical bills from the alleged sexual assault, also said that the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity failed to implement policies to protect women in cases like hers.
The alleged sexual assault at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is just the latest in a string of sexually-related crimes that have occurred on college campuses over the years, especially at fraternities.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Assistant Police Chief Hassan Ramzah said the police department is actively investigating the report at this time but did not provide further details.
This is the second University of Nebraska-Lincoln fraternity to be sued for an alleged sexual assault, as the Alpha Theta Chi chapter of Chi Phi fraternity was sued earlier this year.
