Early Life

Jacob deGrom was born and raised in Deland, Florida. When he was young, his father built a batting cage in their backyard so Jacob could practice baseball at home. To this day Jacob tributes his humility and quiet confidence to his father, Tony. Growing up Jacob had two older sisters, so sports were his escape from his house of women while his father worked.

High School (2003-2007)

Jacob deGrom attended Calvary Christian Academy where he was a basketball and baseball star. His senior year he was selected to the All-Florida Second Team for his baseball talent. This is also when he was noticed by Stetson University, who ended up offering deGrom a scholarship to play baseball there.

His freshman and sophomore years of college deGrom played exclusively at shortstop, where he was a phenomenal fielder, but not much of a hitter. He was offered to play on a Summer League college team after his sophomore year but declined the invitation because they wanted to make him a pitcher. However, at the start of his junior year, Stetson moved him into a relieving pitching role as well. He quickly became one of their best pitchers and was moved into a starting pitching role. The rest is history. deGrom began to catch the attention of MLB scouts in a game where he pitched against now fellow MLB ace, Chris Sale.

MLB Career (2010-Present)

Jacob deGrom was drafted in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB draft by the New York Mets. He was assigned to their minor league system and played there until 2014 when he was called up to the big leagues. On May 15th, 2014, deGrom made his MLB debut as a starter against the New York Yankees. He pitched seven innings and allowed only one run on seven strikeouts. deGrom went on to continue his early success and won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2014. Since then deGrom has been a force in the major leagues. In the 2018 season, he has set several Mets franchise records, was named to the NL All-Star team and will finish the season with the lowest ERA in the MLB. He is the favorite to win the 2018 NL Cy Young award when the season wraps up in October.

Personal Life

deGrom met his wife Stacey shortly after high school and they have been married since 2014. Outside of baseball season, they live in deGrom’s hometown of DeLand, Florida. They now have two children together, Jaxon and Aniston.
