Iowa State Golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena Found Dead At Coldwater Golf Links

Celia Barquin Arozamena, 22, has been identified as the Iowa State University student that was found dead at the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa on Monday, September 17.
According to reports, police were called to the Coldwater Golf Links course on the morning of Monday, September 15, after an unattended golf bag was found. When police arrived, they found Barquín’s body a short distance away and determined she had been assaulted.
22-year-old Collin Daniel Richard has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the crime. The Ames police department says Richards has no known address.
Arozamena, originally from Puente San Miguel, Spain, won the European Ladies’ Amateur championship in July, won the 2018 Big 12 championship, and was named Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year.

Barquin Arozamena claimed the 2018 Big 12 Championship with a three-shot victory in April, according to the university, which called her one of the most accomplished golfers in the school’s history. She was finishing her civil engineering degree this semester.
“Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. “Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador.”
Barquin Arozamena qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open in Alabama this summer, one of the LPGA Tour’s majors, but did not make the cut after the first two rounds.
Iowa State University president Dr. Wendy Wintersteen released the following statement about Arozamena’s death:

“This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and an acclaimed student-athlete. We mourn with her family and friends in Spain, her teammates here and all who knew her. On behalf of the entire Cyclone family, I extend our deep condolences to Celia’s family and her many friends and teammates at Iowa State. We are deeply saddened.”

The Iowa State University athletic department will honor Arozamena at the football game on Saturday, September 22. Funeral arrangements for Arozamena have yet to be announced.
