Fans of the late Mac Miller, who died of an apparent overdose on Friday, September 6, will have the opportunity to pay tribute to the late ‘Swimming’ rapper at a vigil being held at Blue Slide Park in Pittsburgh.
The vigil for Malcolm James McCormick will take place on Tuesday, September 11 at 5 p.m. EST. in the Frick Park section of Blue Slide Park, which is located at the intersection of Beechwood Boulevard and Nicholson Street.
Blue Slide Park, the name of Mac Miller’s debut studio album, featured a track titled “Frick Park Market.”
The announcement of the vigil was made on Facebook:
We would like to bring the city together in full force for this legendary icon. Mac deserves to be sent off with an evening of celebrating his life, discussing his struggles, and remembering his stories; most importantly for his iconic work that brought joy into the lives of everybody who listened.
We are welcoming all artists to come and paint, create, draw, live tribute art for this event.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Public Works plans to repaint the famed blue slide on Tuesday with a special epoxy. The Post-Gazette also reports that a documentary will be filming during the event.
The schedule for the vigil is as follows:
– The vigil begins at 5 p.m. EST and will include the playing of Miller’s music; the creation of drawings, paintings, and murals.
– Speakers will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST to talk about how the rapper touched their lives.
– The candlelight ceremony will begin around 9:30 p.m.
At this time, no official announcement has been made in regards to funeral services for McCormick. Similarly, there is no word on whether or not the vigil will be streamed online.
